War, for example, focuses primarily upon the major decisions of the war and those who made them. This contrasts with Erich M. Remarques perspective and focus in his novel All Quiet on the Western Front, which the focus is primarily that of the common man. Both perspectives are needed to fully understand the cataclysmic conflict that history calls World War I. Perrys text explains the political tensions that existed in Europe prior to the war, such as, the system of alliances that pulled countries into the conflict once Austria-Hungary decided to use the assassination of Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serbian as a pretext for war against that country. In describing the decisions of leaders and the reasons behind the war, the most pertinent part of Perrys analysis that relates to Remarques novel is the section that Perry entitles "War as Celebration" (Perry 514). In this discussion, Perry describes how all Europeans, on both sides, believed t hat the war would be short, probably six weeks at most. For decades, on both sides, state-directed educational goals had been busily indoctrinating youth in nationalistic attitudes. Therefore, Europe marched to war happily convinced that it would be a great adventure and an opportunity for glory. Remarques purpose in writing All Quiet was largely to dispel nationalistic fantasies about warfare and depict WWI in realistic fashion as perceived by the common German soldier. Perry describes why leaders plans for the war went wrong, such as, nineteenth century tactics (such as armed cavalry charges) against twentieth century military innovations (such as machine guns) and how this resulted in incredible carnage with little or no advancement on either side.
