(Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and National Guard), much of the benefits are administered under the auspices of the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), which has, as its goal, "to provide benefits and services to the veterans and their families in a responsive, timely and compassionate manner in recognition of their service to the Nation." (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2005). Basically, there are two types of VA payments -- these are disability compensation payments and pension benefits (Williams, 1999). Disability compensation payments are given to veterans who are disabled through injury, disease or illnesses that were either from tour of duty (or aggravated by an active tour of duty) (Williams, 1999). Pension benefits, in the meantime, are directed toward veterans who have low incomes and/or a low net worth, and who are disabled and cant work due to reasons that might not relate to military service (Williams, 1999). In this category, there are three types of pensions: Old law pensions, section 306 pensions and improved pensions (Williams, 1999). Each of the pensions differ in terms of their payment amounts as well as different income limitations (Williams, 1999). The VA, overall, offers benefits in a variety of areas, including education (through the GI Bill) in which veterans can attend college and be reimbursed in full (or part) for their education; compensation and pension plans, which includes burial benefits and service-connected compensation and vocational rehabilitation and employment (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2005). The latter is geared toward those in the Armed Forces who might have a service-connected disability, and need to be retrained or re-educated for another career. ...
