technology of this age facilities some changes and the way in which this took place was both local and international. The pride in the achievements of the time meant the style of development changes as did many of the underlying idea. However, there were also differences. In looking at the way urban planning took place in both Paris and London in the late nineteenth century some comparisons may be made. It is first possible to understand the way in which the attitudes changed. There was a pride in the age and a desire to reflect that in the way that towns and cities were built. This meant that the mimicry of the past and the desire to replicate past styles and patterns faded away. This may be seen in buildings such as the Eiffel tower, built in Paris in 1889 and the Crystal Palace, built in London in 1851. These no longer had the same facades, but can be seen as technical achievements that were also seen as steel frameworks and representative of the technology of the time. The urban planning itself also changed. There become a greater awareness of the interaction between the environment and those that lived init. Poor cramped conditions had lead to many social ills. The changes were not made over night, but the aspects of change can be seen in the way that the planning took place. In Paris there was restructuring, this involved the developments of wider roads, with the way that streets were organised becoming very different. During earlier times the development of a city was very haphazard, planning was not seen n an holistic sense, and many areas would have consisted of small streets interweaving.
