reaching greater and greater levels of attainment, while the lower classes fight for existence and dreams of attaining those things enjoyed by the upper class. For the lower classes, such desires often remain a dream, while for the upper classes dreams represent reality. Dreams are positive expressions of goals. By attaining or missing goals, an individual believes he can judge himself in terms of success or failure. However, this is not always true. All people of all classes have dreams; some are achieved and others are not. But there are differences between dreams for the separate classes. For the lower class exposed to a commercial on Nikes, a child may desire owning that brand of shoes. For the upper class, this is not a dream, it is a real possibility. In fact, Nikes can be rejected in favor of a more expensive brand of shoes. Still, if an upper class desires that possession, he simply buys it. In this way, the possession holds no lasting interest for the upper class person. In contrast, if it is acquired by a lower class person, the value is maintained for a time. The Nikes are shown off as something special. Possessions often define the difference between upper and lower class people. However, often the upper class desires an elusive thing called "freedom," like a day or so without possessions or the opportunity to just do something without having to plan for it. The prevailing thought and probable truth is that when the lower classes want to play ball, they merely pick up the ball and mitt and ask their friends to join them in a park or field.
