In addition, there have been other major crashes, major security issues, economic issues as a result of fewer passengers due to the terrorist attacks, and more. To say these have been turbulent times in this industry is an understatement. The fact is, that many employees within this industry are union members. Now more than ever there are some serious issues which this industry, and therefore the unions, must address. There is little question that air travel is essential to this country but in light of recent happenings major changes have been taking place and will continue to take place. From a historical standpoint, it is amazing how the growth of the airline industry has revolutionized the world. We truly now live in a global economy and commuting to a job via the airlines is becoming commonplace (The Airline Industry, 2002). Travel for both business and pleasure opportunities abound and have been a driving force behind globalisation. "The international airline industry provides service to virtually every corner of the globe and has played an essential role in the creation of a global economy" (The Airline Industry, 2002).
