U.S. relations in the Middle East are tense at best, and that region continues to be an international hot spot that could potentially produce more problems for the U.S. Recent events highlight this trend. On August 13, 2003, Israeli troops demolished the home of a West bank teen, as he was a suicide bomber responsible for two bombing attacks the day before (Israel Restrained After Suicide Attacks, 2003). This comes in the wake of a cease-fire declared on June 29, 2003 by Palestinian militant groups (Israel Restrained After Suicide Attacks, 2003). Israel asserts that actions such as this will indeed thwart peace talks, and has put Palestinian leaders on warning (Israel Restrained After Suicide Attacks, 2003). The peace plan that this recent action violates is one that is backed by the U.S. United States Secretary of State Colin Powel said in response to this recent action that the administration would continue to push for a peace accord, but that it would not succeed unless the violence stops (Israel Restrained After Suicide Attacks, 2003). The current plan calls for the phased withdraw of Israeli troops from occupied areas, but conversely the Palestinians are to dismantle violent extremist groups as well (Israel Restrained After Suicide Attacks, 2003). The creation of a Palestinian state is foreseen as early as 2005 (Israel Restrained After Suicide Attacks, 2003). Therefore, the violence that is now occurring in Israel is indeed significant because it evidently can make peace efforts null and void.
