is visiting the U.S. or setting up business here there are several cultural considerations that should made. Having the ability to communicate with the the citizenry of the U.S. is of particular importance. This can be quite a task given that the history of the country is one involving the entry of a number of different cultures over a number of diffeent periods in history. Over time, many of these individuals have assimilated into mainstream U.S. culture. For those that have assimilated cross cultural communication does not present such a stumbling block. Others in our country, however, have maintained unique cultural identities. Some do not even have a command of the English language and for communication to occur the visitor or the business person must make provisions to communicate with these individuals in their particular language. Not all aspects of communication involve fluency in any particular language, however. Indeed, there are many other aspects of communication that are tied to race, ethnicity, gender, and even religion. Equally important in optimizing a visit to the U.S. or establishing a business here is understanding the basic democratic and capitalistic premises on which the country was founded. Many in the turbulent times of today chose to condemn U.S. government and culture rather than to recognize it for its tremendous strength and fortitude. Some, in fact, even question our governments legitimacy. Many argue that our government has made a rapid spiral downward since its original inception. This stance is without basis, however. We are, and will remain, the strongest democracy in the world and that strength is based in the tremendous flexibility awarded to us by our founding fathers in such documents ...
