History The Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii has been a presence since "Waikiki was an uninhabited salt marsh when the first U.S. Army medics arrived here in the late 1800s". The origins of the building which has sat on top of Moanalua Ridge since 1948 actually began much earlier when in 1907, several wooden structures at Fort Shafter were used as an army hospital. In 1920, the facility was named in the honor of Brevet Brigadier General Charles Stuart Tripler as a "reminder to his contributions to Army medicine during the Civil War" (Tripler, 2003). During World War II, the 450-bed facility grew to over 1,000 beds and the addition of a many barracks-style buildings. The design for a new facility began in 1942 and the distinctive "coral pink structure atop Moanalua Ridge was dedicated on September 19, 1948 and has been a familiar landmark on the south shore of Oahu ever since" (Tripler, 2003).
