This can only mean one thing. The sheepskin matters. Kohler & Sapp (2000) qualifies the trend and say: "Lack of education and training reduces the number of employment opportunities available to women" (p.20). Still, many can argue that the problem is gender neutral and in fact, middle aged white men find themselves pushed out of the job market more often than most. Other statistics adds to the proof that in fact, college matters. As educational levels decrease, unemployment tends to increase; for those who had less than a bachelors degree, unemployment was 3.0% as reported in 1999, but then went to 4.0 % for the same year in respect to those with only a high school diploma ("Unemployment," 1999) . As the world becomes more and more complicated, many workers need training or higher education to avoid losing jobs or being passed over for promotions. Many times when all things are equal, the person with the college education gets the promotion or is hired for a position. Employers see the degree as a sort of prerequisite. Even if the degree has nothing to do with the position, the fact that the individual took the time to become well educated, and passed all college level classes, provides a semblance of the level of intelligence possessed by that person. He or she is considered to be well rounded. Not only are those who lack the degree labeled and thrown away as candidates for good, entry-level jobs in business, they are stigmatized also by the larger society.
