for riches beyond belief, the search for gold or other rare items was underway. Columbus had successfully discovered America, and the spirit of adventure continued. The Spaniards were to gain
much of the South American lands and turn them into Spanish colonies, however in the way they exploited the land they were also to waste many of the resources and
eventually to loose them for good. Vasco Nunez de Balboas trekked across from the Atlantic to the Pacific in a long and dangerous
journey, he was to be followed by the conquistadors seeking gold in Peru (Lea 1898). In their wake the native population were crushed by massacres and enslavement, or alternatively by
the diseases that the Spaniards brought across with them. Panama was to become a major point in the trade between the Spanish
Empire and its colonies. Panama was to be one of the richest colonies in the New World. Trade in the New World
colonies of Spain, not only Panama, was to reflect the changing fortunes of Spain herself. By 1656 Philip IV of Spain was in great financial difficulties, he was attempting to
prevent bankruptcy. Much of the taxes were not reaching the royal treasury (Lea 1898). If the taxes within their own country could not be controlled in a sufficient manner to
reach the correct destination then it is not surprising that they were not good managers of their colonies. It was the same flaws that caused the domestic problems that would
