An approach based purely on physicalism would assert that what makes a person the person they are is nothing more than the particular collection of atoms of which they are formed. However, such a statement leaves no room for the changes every person experiences or the ways in which an individual develops a unique personality. In addition, a delineation must also be determined between an individuals self-construction, self-presentation and the constructions and assumptions others make regarding that individual. Insofar as personality is in some sense multi-faceted, many separate considerations have to be made regarding how one person has responded to and been shaped by the events of his or her life. It is through an exploration the characteristics within a person (such as traits, attitudes, and goals), as well as the aspects related to lifes situations (such as social norms and incentives), that personality and social psychologists seek to unravel the mysteries of individual and social life. It should be noted that although personality psychology has most often related to the unique aspects of an individual, while social psychology focuses on aspects of a situation and the interaction between people, the two perspectives are strongly connected in terms of overall psychological explanations of human behavior.
