Hamlet, was the most psychological of all his works. It concerned the alienation of a Moorish military commander, Othello, in a predominantly white mans society. Othello is the
ultimate outsider, and marrying the esteemed Senator Brabantios daughter Desdemona does not change his "persona non grata" status. As a result, his paranoia and insecurity can become easily manipulated
by a cunning and ambitious officer named Iago, who is furious when he is bypassed for a military promotion in favor of another officer, Michael Cassio. Iago immediately seizes
upon Othellos insecurities and pledges to exact his revenge on his commanding officer by exploiting his inner fears of inadequacy, revealed through the "green-eyed monster" of jealousy. Othello has been
performed numerous times on the stage, but because of its reliance on psychological themes rather than observable action, adaptations over the years has presented a formidable challenge to generations of
directors. Because of the intimacy between stage performers and the audience, Shakespeares prose is able to serve as a feature performer, much as the playwright had intended. Lengthy
speeches which describe moods, motives, jealousy and desperation heighten the dramatic tension of the theatrical Othello. Naturally, on a massive motion picture screen, with the viewing audience practically dwarfed
