At other times in their collective history they were most commonly seen as a characteristic of a distinct voluntary organization. The ability to successfully reach ones full potential requires a focused effort and a determination on the part of the patient/client to be a willing participant in the process. For children and adolescents, that ability can be guided by those who are determined that those young people who have already had to deal with whatever issues exist at the root of their emotion and behavior problems. Adolescent Problems and Therapeutic Community Treatment Functionally impaired adolescents virtually always have important causes for their emotional problems and inappropriate behaviors. Often, it is within the setting of a therapeutic community that such issues may be dealt with in the most effective manner. It also provides a "protected" or "safe" environment that allows for change to occur and healing to begin. In addition, in the most effective of TCs, solutions to problems can be and are both discussed, explained, and understood when a certain action is taken.
