The Constitution of the United States stands as one of the most important documents ever written. This document, as is the case for most documents of equal caliber, was written under very specific historic circumstances and concerns. A number of theories have been proposed to explain how and why the Constitution was written. These theories include the Democratic/Pluralist Theory, the Elite Class Theory, and the Hyperpluralism Theory. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief outline of these theories and to provide opinion as to which one is the most applicable. Those who contend that the Democratic/Pluralism Theory was in play both during the writing of the Constitution and as a part of its provisions recognize that the common citizen has the capacity to act reasonably and responsibly when it comes to political action. The Democratic/Pluralism theory recognizes the diversity of American citizenship and actually thrives on that diversity. The Elitism Theory, in contrast, views the common American as incapable of reason and responsibility when it comes to making political decisions. This theory thrives on the existence of an elite class which is capable. Under the elitist theory this class (whether as a result of wealth, education, or life position) is regarded as being responsible for the production of the Constitution and for the completion of its terms. The Hyperpluralism Theory too believes in the diversity of the American people. That theory, however, is one which results in a stagnation to the governmental process in that special interest groups become so strong that they thwart the efficient governmental action.
