various school shootings and violent events, such as the incident at Columbine. It is a reality that has many parents, and professionals, incredibly worried. While violence has always been a
part of society it is something that has caused a great number of people to be incredibly worried about their children and the safety of their children in the schools.
As would be imagined many theories come into play in studying violence in the schools. The following paper examines theories that are being applied to school violence today.
Theories and School Violence It should perhaps be noted, and understood, that many different fields of theories are often applied to violence and school violence. Although they are children they
are people and as such are privy to the same social conditions, as well as psychological and physical, as adults. This offers a situation wherein the theories that can be
applied to school violence are theories that apply to many, if not all, people in one respect or another. With that in mind the paper moves on to discuss various
theories. The first theory to be examined comes from Rami Benbenishty and Ron Avi Astors (2005) work School Violence in Context: Culture, Neighborhood, Family, School, and Gender. In this
book the authors seek an understanding of violence in schools and they illustrate their particular model in their study and research. That model was apparently greatly influenced by a theory
introduced by Bronfenbrenner in 1979. That theory is the "ecological developmental theory, which conceives of violence as interplay among several relevant subsystems" (Benbenishty; Astor, 2005; 5).
