Numerous organizations across the nation have come to the realization that the dramatic arts offer an outlet of expression for people of all ages. The theatre, in particular, is a valued component of that outlet. It serves as a focal point for several community dialogue/outreach organizations, one of the more notable being "Hope is Vital", the organization around which Michael Rohds "Theatre for Community Conflict and Dialogue: The Hope Is Vital Training Manual" is structured. This book illuminates the importance of the theatre in enhancing drama and socialization skills, skills that can be a critical component practically any educational setting. The techniques illuminated by Rohd, however, allow us to extend our impact out of our particular educational setting and into the community as a whole. The intent of this paper is to evaluate the value of the method identified by Rohd in a religious institution, an institution whose goal is to connect with as many members of the community as possible and to play a positive role in effecting social change. Rohds method is invaluable in the community arena. It presents step by step procedures for incorporating drama in the classroom but it also provides us the ammunition to move the impact of that drama from the classroom and into the community. Structured as improvisational theatre games, the activities encourage student interaction and improve communication skills. Students develop a camaraderie much quicker and are more eager to identify with one another and the group as a whole.
