The World of Yesterday, he gives a graphic and compelling account of the devastating changes in the world order which were brought about by the First and Second World Wars,
and in particular the impact on the international Jewish community. Zweig
himself, after years of exile which he described as years of homeless wandering, did not survive to see the end of the Second World War, but committed suicide in 1942.
In The World of Yesterday, he begins by describing what he refers to as the Golden Age of Security, namely, the period before World War One in which he grew
up. Despite the emergence of socialism in various parts of Europe and the challenge which it afforded to the conservative ruling elite, Austria in this period was so stable and
settled that it seemed impossible that its characteristic civilisation and security could be threatened.
Zweig describes, for example, the way in which the monarchy represented permanence; the royal line had been in place for almost a thousand years, and its
relationship with both the government and the people was ordered and cordial. Everyone was aware of his or her place in society, and could predict the likely progression of life,
in terms of advancement in ones employment, the way in which ones investments would increase, and so on.
Businesses and estates were handed down through the generations, and there was a strong emphasis on careful budgeting and providing for the future.
