terms. Discussion A reader studying Glens story might legitimately conclude that hes a basket case, which is the technical term for someone as messed up as he is. (Joking.) But because the case study is meant to provide numerous examples of psychological problems, it seems that Glen is suffering from every possible syndrome under the sun. The first thing that leaps out at a reader is that Glen had trouble "finding himself," which can be taken to mean that he is not a fully integrated personality. But the really obvious reference is found in the statement that his physical needs are met; and he feels safe in his home and neighborhood. This is almost a textbook reference to Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow believed that people behaved in predictable ways depending on which of their needs were met, and he posited a pyramid in which the most important needs are on the lowest tier, slightly less important above that, and so on up through seven levels. A person must fulfill his lower needs before he can turn his attention to higher ones. At the very bottom of the pyramid are the physiological needs: food, shelter and clothing; the next step up are the safety needs (Maslows theory of motivation - Hierarchy of needs, 2009). Glen has already fulfilled the first two levels: he has enough to live on and he feels safe, but his parents fear that he will never reach is full potential. That comment alone is a clue that this is Maslow. Maslow was a behaviorist who turned to humanism when he found behaviorism too cold and detached.
