In some ways, the tragedy at the center of the work involves a case of mistaken identity--Bianca for Desdemona--and is something that would ultimately lead to Desdemonas death. Bianca is a mistress and a pawn and unwittingly plays a part in the inevitable tragic conclusion. Bianca also becomes quite jealous, like Othello. Emilia dies too, like Desdemona. It is when her conscience gets the best of her that she decides to tell Othello the truth about Iagos plot. It is because of this that Emilia is redeemed at the end. Desdemona of course is an innocent victim, but she is not worldly like Emilia. In some way, she differs from Desdemona in that she is married to someone as plotting as Iago and is not innocent. While to an extent she plays along, she does in the end, try to compensate for her bad acts, something that gets her killed. Of course, Desdemona dies for love while Emilia dies due to a betrayal. They are killed for completely different reasons but both at the hands of their lovers. It is her marriage to Iago that in some way shapes the character of Emilia. Many have seen Iago as evil, but what is Iagos true motivation? It could in fact be that he is envious of Othello. Yet, he seems to be somewhat proud and enamored of himself. One might compare him to Will in Big Brother 2 where he would call himself the "evil doctor" perhaps to endear himself to others. In reality, he was honest in that he continually lied. This in some way may characterizes Iago who may not be the most honest individual, but he is able to get along with people and no one really knows what he is up ...
