The shepherds too play their part, but are often not central to the story and are certainly not as important as Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Wakefield Master, who lived in the Middle Ages, changed that and did render the shepherds quite relevant. The Second Shepherds Play was composed during the 1400s by someone known as "The Wakefield Master" ("Santa Fe" PG). In fact, as many as five or six plays--not just the Second Shepherds Play--have been attributed to this hypothetical single author who took that title (Dwyer PG). The exact number of plays written is not known and there is some dispute about that (PG). Some contend there are as little as four or as many as ten (PG). In terms of plays where the subject matter is related to the adoration of the Christ child by shepherds, only The Second Shepherds Play is attributed to the Wakefield master (Dwyer PG). The Second Shepherds Play is the most well known and intensely studied work of its type (PG). It has been considered of a high caliber for semitone to come out of the medieval era and it may best be understood within the environment in which it was written (PG).
