of mystery that surrounds it. It is believed to have been built between 120 and 124 AD (Gardner, 1936). It is also thought that the first Pantheon was built by Emperor Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (Parker, 2007). That was in 27 AD but in 80 AD the structure was unfortunately burned ("Pantheon," 2007). Some years after Agrippa ordered the building of this structure, his successors adopted son Hadrian designed a Pantheon that was much more prolific (Parker, 2007). The purpose of this new creation, which would last, was done with the intention of creating a sanctuary for the gods (Parker, 2007). Interestingly, it would later be dedicated as a Catholic church (Parker, 2007). When viewing this structure, it is clearly something of immense beauty and is also something that may be thought of as religious in nature. Photographs of the Pantheon reveal it to be a very large structure with an outside replete with many columns. At first glance, it is rather ordinary. This is however typical Greek architecture. There is also a dome in the center of the large structure and two towers in front of the dome. Everything about the building is oversized. For example, the entranceway boasts a huge set of doors many times larger than the people who enter the building. Interestingly, this building has only one doorway (Gardner, 1936). Gardner (1936) goes on to explain that the entrance is "a colonnaded portico of Greek design" (p. 187). While the exterior is a rather simple building, the inside is anything but average. It is magnificent. Light shines through to illuminate the apparently golden and marble walls and floor.
