robot-like, the truth is that the individuals behind the roles are just ordinary folk. They have chosen a career path which allows them to work closely with numbers. And the tasks themselves are not quite as boring as many would think. For example, a tax accountant does have to come up with creative ways to take deductions, researching the law like a lawyer and computing the results like a mathematician. In fact, the career path of accountancy can be quite rewarding. Things have however changed throughout the years as much of the accountants role has been mechanized. This of course leaves more room for analytical work. In the past, accountants would have to sharpen their pencils and use adding machines, saving the tapes and stapling them to appropriate backup materials. Today, the computer makes life easier for the accountant. However, with the computer comes both new problems and opportunities for the certified public accountant. Matthews (1998) reports that major influences now and in the future are communications and information technology, organizational restructuring, globalization and internationalization. Additionally, quality and continuous improvement initiatives will be factors (1998). Obviously, such trends in the business world will have a significant effect on the tasks accountants will be expected to perform and how they will have to go about it. Largely, these changes are positive and open new doors for those in the field. In focusing in on the changes which come with an increase in information technology, it helps to know that the accountant is not alone in his or her plight. The computer has changed life for everyone including secretaries, clerks, cashiers and executives.
