Craving is addressed by a considerable body of Indian philosophy, not the least of which are the First and Second Noble Truths of Buddhism. Buddha, of course, identified Four Noble Truths. They may be briefly stated as follows: Human life is an existence of suffering. Human suffering is caused by desire for things that cannot satisfy the spirit. There is a cessation of suffering, called Nirvana, or total transcendence; and there is a path leading to the end of suffering. Suffering can be ended and man set free by renouncing these desires, which are rooted in ignorance. Under Buddhist philosophy, therefore, craving is regarded as a cause as well as product of suffering or, in other words, as not only causing suffering but resulting from suffering. Craving can also be related to the eight meritorious thoughts: "which belong to the realm of sensual pleasure and show themselves in alms-giving, keeping the precepts, etc." Craving can also be related to karma, a karma consisting of bodily karma, vocal karma and mental karma, each defined below: bodily karma: "consists of an even score of thoughts, namely, of the eight meritorious thoughts which belong to the realm of sensual pleasure and of the twelve demeritorious ones.
