word "pyramid" actually describes a geometric shape. A pyramid requires three elements to complete it: it is a "3-dimenstional figure with triangular side faces that meet at a common vertex, with a polygon base" (Elizabeth). It is the shape of their base that classifies pyramids: a triangular pyramid "has a triangular base and three triangular side faces. A square pyramid has a square base and four triangular sides" and so on (Elizabeth). The pyramids in Egypt are square pyramids. Why did the ancient Egyptians build pyramids? They believed that when a pharaoh died, he became the "King of the Dead," Osiris, while his successor became Horus, "god of the heavens and protector of the sun god" ("Introduction to Pyramids"). This never-ending cycle was symbolized by the daily rising and setting of the sun ("Introduction to Pyramids"). The Egyptians believed, however, that some part of the spirit remained attached to the body, and if the body was not properly cared for, the deceased pharaoh would be unable to carry out his "new duties as King of the Dead, the cycle would be broken and disaster would befall Egypt" ("Introduction to Pyramids"). Who designed and built the pyramids and how? According to history, the pyramid builders were not foreigners or slaves, but Egyptians who lived in villages constructed specifically for this workforce ("Introduction to Pyramids"). These villages comprised brewers, butchers, bakers, houses, graveyards, even probably some sort of health-care-everything a person could want ("Introduction to Pyramids"). Some of the builders "were permanent employees of the pharaoh. Others were conscripted for a limited time from local villages" ("Introduction to Pyramids").
