A side by side review of two articles: Tamara Roleffs "Cloning Research Could be Beneficial to Humans" and Kevin T. Fitzgeralds "Cloning Research Would Not Benefit Humans", each of which is reprinted in the Opposing Viewpoints series. This paper outlines the content of these two articles and compares their approaches in regard to such factors as empirical basis, bias, propaganda, credibility, and logical fallacies (errors of perspective, errors of procedure, and errors of reaction). Presented in a question/answer format, the paper summarizes the facts presented by each author as well as the respective opinions. The paper concludes that while "Cloning Research Could be Beneficial to Humans" is really too brief and concise to evidence many problems per se, and that the material in that article is presented in a factual and forthright way, the Fitzgerald article is another story. Fitzgerald presents fact but then he undermines those facts with opinion rather than credible reasoning. That article also exhibits several errors of logical fallacy (errors of perspective, errors of procedure, and errors of reaction). This paper goes on to assert that while the credentials of both of these authors is exemplary the one is more credible than the other in that it relies on fact rather than opinion. The paper concludes that given the moral and ethical considerations that go hand in hand with cloning, one can understand why there must be some regulation and restrictions. This is particularly true in regard to research involving the cloning of humans. As with all types of regulations and restrictions, however, they are only as effective as the people they are regulating wish to abide by them.
