Because a large part of the populace of early Europe (c.1250-1400) was unable to read, communication transmitted by the historic Church was through the visual image. Messages concerning religious history and mans role within that framework were painted on the insides of church buildings. At this period of history the average man may not have traveled more than fifty miles from his birthplace, and consequently his exposure to the rest of the world was limited. However, his exposure to the world of God was of prime importance - both to him and to the Church. It was within the literal church walls that this person both heard and saw his role within his known world. Politics within early Italy played as proportionate a role then as it does now. And the urban centers of the country, known as "city-states", each with its own customs, dialect and governmental system independently ruled the populace. In fact the country was not united under a central government until the 1860s. Both the factors of historic Italian citizen within his own environment, and the politics that swirled around him need to be considered in the progression of the visual image within this time frame.
