In this story one woman, sitting by herself for an hour after hearing the news of her husbands death, slowly comes to some powerful realizations that offer her hope for her own future. They are thoughts that involve freedom, something she has never known before. In Chopins story the main character is fearful of the unknown freedom, at first, and then finds herself immersed in the wondrous feelings of freedom, only to leave herself so vulnerable in the end, because of her freedom, that she dies when seeing her husband is alive, unable to deal with a return to her old ways of oppression. Her freedom offers her power and pain. The Power, and the Pain, of Freedom: Chopins The Story of an Hour In the beginning of Chopins story it is subtly obvious that the woman, Mrs. Mallard, is a woman who has long repressed her feelings, her dreams, and ultimately her identity: "She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength" (Chopin). She is in a daze, alone, concerning her husbands sudden death, unsure what to think or do and as she sits and waits for something, she does not know, she grows a bit fearful. "There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully...she felt it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air" In fact she was, for a moment, terrified. This is because she has always been the dutiful wife, fulfilling the role of a wife. She claims that she did, at times, love the man.
