Over the decades, even areas like the lower east side have been transformed into expensive neighborhoods. While the rent control debate has always been the center of much controversy in New Yorks beautiful older buildings, real estate in New York has always been golden. It is after all the home to many famous stars and some see it as the center of the universe. With world class shops and restaurants and a mecca of businesses, New York City had grown into a powerful place. Its rents and apartments are outrageously expensive. It is not unheard of for a small apartment to be sold for a half million dollars or rented for three thousand dollars per month. Dependent on location, rents and sale prices vary, but New York has a considerably high cost of living when compared with other areas. Its real estate is especially high. That is, real estate was extraordinarily high until September 11, 2001. The terrorist attacks which occurred on September 11, 2001 shocked the nation. Never before had one event, with the possible exception of Pearl Harbor, created such chaos in the United States. Even after President Kennedys death, the nation only stopped shopping for a few days, and then everything went back to what was thought to be normal. After September 11, 2001, things would never be the same again. A war had begun directly after the attacks and the economy took a dive. People still feel a sense that something is awry. In New York, that sense that things are not back to normal is multiplied. The worst part of the attacks centered in New York. With its skyline tarnished forever it seems as if things will never be the same. Further, people are afraid that more attacks will center on cities ...
