CAM is based upon the philosophical premise that to achieve total health, there must be a unity of "the body, the mind, and the spirit" (Tovey, Easthope, and Adams 99). Massage therapy as performed by a licensed therapist, has emerged as a primary component of CAM that has grown in popularity in recent years that has been shown to provide beneficial physical and emotional benefits for individual (child and adult) wellness (Tuchtan 236). It has been defined as a "therapeutic manipulation of the muscles and associated soft tissue of the body" through various techniques including stroking, rubbing, kneading, and tapping (Tuchtan 232). The health and illness beliefs associated with massage therapy are numerous. They are based on the premise that a healthy mind and body go hand in hand. The health benefits attributed to massage therapy include: * Flushing toxins and waste from your body; * Creating healthier skin and better muscle tone; * Reducing stress; * Feeling refreshed and relaxed; * Improving blood circulation; and * Aiding recovery from sprains and strains (Starling 61). Massage therapy has had a long and interesting historical evolution, and its origins are largely responsible for the reluctance of allopathic medical professionals to accept it as a legitimate practice of scientific medicine. It was initially included in ancient shaman rituals and its mystical healing aspects attracted the dominant civilizations throughout ancient history, including Egypt, India, Greece, and Rome (Tuchtan 229).
