he could just walk in and take over. He almost did until coalition forces stepped in. In the end, the Bush administration of the early 1990s, and the U.N. Security Council, each stated their objectives as being the restoration of the status quo (Sterner, 1990). That would of course mean the unconditional withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait and the restoration of Kuwaits original government (1990). The Gulf War of course was precipitated by Saddam Husseins occupation of Kuwait. It was the event that put Kuwait on the map. Of course, Kuwait is a wealthy country in its own right and has been for some time. In respect to the war in the early 1990s, things had gone well. Fast forward a decade and in 2000 there had been a clear indication that gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait had even been getting along better with Yemen (Sudam, 2000). Yemen had once strongly supported Iraq, something particularly apparent during the 1990 invasion of Kuwait (2000). Yemen also has had a long term border dispute with Saudi Arabia (2000). Another point is that even when in November of 1994 Iraq accepted a UN-created border with Kuwait, the Iraqi Government does challenge the border on occasion ("Kuwait," 2003). Iraq had been a threat long after the Gulf War. Yet, although these factors have been thorns, things seem to have improved. Today, Kuwait is clearly acting in its own national interest. However, the war in Iraq that began in March of 2003 has changed things. The landscape has been altered once again for Kuwait. Questions linger. Are these small gulf nations up to par in terms of defense systems or are they backwards and vulnerable to attack? What has happened in the course of nearly a decade since ...
