While that was all perfectly reasonable within his own reality, he didnt seem to understand the impossibility of completely changing the Indians in every imaginable way. While determined to make this happen and simply force the Indians into complying, the Indians realized that they were quickly losing all that was important to them. They had next to nothing which gave them little to lose. So, after Meeker had been there just about one year, the Indians decided they had had enough and rebelled against Meeker and his associates. History of the Ute The Ute Mountain Tribes Reservation was in southwest Colorado, southeast Utah, and northern New Mexico (The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, 2002). Furthermore, "there are two communities on the Ute Reservation; the tribal headquarters in Towaoc, Colorado and the small community at White Mesa, Utah" (The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, 2002). The early Ute Indians were dominated by a hunter-gatherer society, and they moved often in order to follow the best hunting and harvesting (The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, 2002). "Their dealings with the government were not to their benefit and in the late 1800s, treaties with the Untied States forced the three bands of Southern Utes into southwestern Colorado" (The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, 2002).
