is a play of many masks. In this discussion we shall look at the major ones. "To Be or Not to Be" Words can have masking qualities as much
as putting a physical mask over your face. Romanian theater director Andrei Serban (2000), comments, "It could be interpreted as "to be or not to be awake." To be
aware of your own presence, or not to be. "Or not to be" is how we are most of the time, asleep in life. Also, yes, to act or not
to act. "Not to be" is to be passive. Thats very much how I understand it. Theater is there to infuse us with an immediate, intensified perception. "Am I able
to be or not?" becomes a shared question." Or in the case of our masking question, we start to look at who we really are the mask, or what
is behind it. Claudius The new king, brother of the old king runs into this problem. The court of Hamlets youth grows into something much more boisterous. We
could say that the gaiety of the new court masks the secrets of the old one. Claudius as a supportive brother to the old king has worn a mask for
quite some time particularly if he has been "engaged" with the current queen. As the play progresses, Claudius wrestles with is "mask:" "Where to serves mercy/ But to confront the
visage of offense?/ And thats in prayer but his twofold force,/ to be forestalled are we come to fall,/ Or pardoned being down?" He then answers his own question
