to one of 250 different churches (Nafzger PG). There are 14.7 million Lutherans in Germany, 8.7 million in North America, 7.6 in Sweden, 6.2 in Africa, 4.6 in Finland, 4.6
in Asia, 4.5 in Denmark, 3.9 in Norway, and just 2.4 million in Indonesia (PG). One can see that with the addition of all the other Protestant sects, and the
with the number of Roman Catholics, there are a great deal of Christians in the world. However, Lutheranism is rather unique in that the sect was the original faction that broke
from Roman Catholicism. Basically, Lutherans accept and teach the Bible-based philosophies of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation during the sixteenth century ("Belief" PG). In fact, the
Reformation that brought about the split between the Catholic church and other Christians all started with Martin Luther. Luther, a German monk, decided to protest against several practices in the
church (Roberts 292). One controversial position he took was that the sacraments may have not been necessary for salvation, but rather, mere belief in Jesus Christ was all that was
needed (292). This was an important aspect. He was saying that the Pope was not really necessary, nor was the church, but rather individual belief and practice in respect to
biblical teachings was all that was required (292). Unlike today, where one can go join a different sect of Protestantism if they like, or leave the Catholic church, things
