In fact, Augustus Caesar was just 18 years old when his uncles murder "propelled him into the Roman political arena" (Casson 82). Indeed, he in some way stumbled into politics. A decade or so later, Augustus would become even more powerful. At the age of 32, when Mark Antony committed suicide in 31 B.C. Augustus became an overlord and took over the territory that went from Syria to Spain (82). It was a large task for a young man and quite an accomplishment for Augustus who was still a relatively young man. Yet, he was able to change the territory from what it was, to what it would become as the great Roman Empire (82). He put a government into place and then created an army and navy to boot (82). The Roman Empire would last for centuries, some say thanks to the work of Augustus (82). He put in a great deal of effort to lay an infrastructure that would last. While a successful leader, there are many facts and fallacies about this man who was not quite as famous as Julius, but has a great legacy in his own right. The Emperor Augustus of Rome was actually born with the name Octavian on September 23rd in 63 B.C. (Chew). He then took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus in 44 B.C., something that occurred after the murder of his great uncle, Julius (Chew). Again, Julius Caesar is infamous and many call him just Caesar. It should be noted that there is an interesting history associated with the family name.
