Good leaders possess traits similar to the ones named above. A good leader is said to possess good character and generally is honest, courageous and straightforward. Leadership behavior is sometimes also called leadership style (Greenberg, 1994). There are many types of leadership styles. One is charismatic, while another is transformational and yet another is transactional. The list goes on and on. Charismatic leaders often are able to control people due to their personalities. Many dictators possess charisma for example, but good leaders also may have charisma. Some see Bill Clinton as charismatic and this designation is true of many politicians, but that is not necessarily a politicians leadership style. Manning (2003) looks at transformational leadership and explains that this type of leadership is a style that is equated with a leaders pattern of interactions that actually serves to make the group more powerful, developed and satisfied. Transformational leaders nurture their followers. Sometimes there is an inspirational or charismatic element to it (Manning, 2003). Many have dubbed Martin Luther King as a transformational leader as he inspired many and was able to develop other leaders. Machiavellian leaders on the other hand are dictatorial in nature. They tell the people what to do as if it is for their own good. Perhaps a helpful analogy is parents who spout orders at their children. Leadership situations are the circumstances that crop up and demand the time of the leader. For example, someone would be in a leadership situation if in fact he or she were elected to office.
