Many of the people who are considered to be great leaders have something called charisma. Many of these people who possess grace and charm and a good command of the English language will capture the hearts and minds of the people. With a touch of charisma, leadership can go a long way. Charismatic authority is somewhat of an enigma. By virtue of attractive personality characteristics, a man or woman acquires authority because the people believe in his or her extraordinary capabilities as a leader. Thus, in order to rule, someone with charismatic authority, need not be elected or born into a position. They simply need to win the confidence of the people. Dictators and cult leaders are usually endowed with the gift and come to power in this way. David Koresh is one example but there are countless other cult leaders. But charisma is also a trait possessed by many good people, one of whom was Martin Luther King, Jr. The power of both rhythm and repetition has been, over and over again, illustrated by Martin Luther Kings use of the phrase "Let freedom ring" in his famous "I Have a Dream" speech (Gardner and Avolio 32). He also did this with "free at last" as a catch phrase which echoes in many peoples minds. The rhythmic repetition in louder tones had mesmerized and ignited the emotions of his audiences (32). This strategy also had increased the recall of Kings central message (32). Charismatic speakers seem to be skilled at using appropriate rhetoric to convey their messages and to evoke positive affect and forge an emotional bond with the audience (32).
