an everyday occurrence in police work. The legalities dictating what is acceptable in search and seizure and what is not, however, are complex to say the least. Consider, for example, a hypothetical situation involving a residence located at 100 Lark Lane. Law enforcement personnel have received a tip that the residence is being used as a methamphetamine lab and, after receiving a positive indication from a piece of equipment designed to detect the presence of certain gases that can be used in the manufacture of meth, obtained a telephonic search warrant for the residence and implemented a number of searches and arrests both there and on the occupants of two separate vehicles believed to be associated with the residence. Each of these searches and the consequent arrests test the limits of search and seizure in very distinct ways. Three individuals (Mike, Mary, and Molly) are arrested in the residence itself in this scenario. When officers searched the residence they found precursor chemicals and supplies that could be used in the manufacture of methamphetamines. As might be expected, the three seek to have the precursor chemicals and the supplies suppressed from evidence at their trial. Interestingly, this request is probably the most likely to be given any credence in this case. Not only are the precursor chemicals discovered at the residence just that, precursory, no meth is actually found as a part of the search. In actuality, the chemicals that were found there could have been used for any of a multitude of purposes. The chemicals in themselves, in fact, should not be a reason for the arrest.
