was a time of conflict not only for North and South Korea but also for the United States. The U.S. committal in Korea was determined, in fact, several years
before the war with the end of World War II. The division of North Korea and South Korea occurred in 1945 as an aftermath of World War II.
Rather than achieving independence as the United States, Great Britain, and China had promised the country during the war, Korea was arbitrarily divided into two political zones to accommodate Soviet
troops to the North and Americans to the South. This resulted in an intolerable situation both in terms of the regions economics and in terms of its politics.
While the Norths strength lie in its industry, the Souths lie in its agriculture. This resulted in an economically interdependent relationship, a relationship which would change dramatically after World
War II with the arbitrary division that was instated. That change would be deleterious on its own but so too would the political separation, a separation largely attributed to
the influence of the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Internal leaders in the countries have played a tremendous role in this transformation as well, however.
South Korea had been in favor of reuniting with North Korea under one government from the time of the original separation. North Korea, on the
other hand, had opposed such reunification. Much of this opposition is attributable to the influence of the U.S.S.R. but it is an opposition which infiltrated the governmental structure of
