A 5 page comparison of child rearing practices. While the traditional Israel Kibbutz emphasized the importance of communal child rearing, in the modern kibbutz the Children’s House no longer exists. Children now live with their families and, consequently, their lives have evolved to center around the family rather than the community. It is a change which is related both to the experiences of the parents themselves as children in the old traditional children’s houses and to recent research findings that communal child rearing practices actually have a considerable propensity for resulting in adverse rather than positive impacts to the children it was designed to aid. Approaches to raising children have sometimes varied radically over time and culture. In the U.S., for example, we most often consider the nuclear family as the most beneficial environment for child care. While we agree to send our children off to school and sometimes temporary child care arrangements, the majority of the day-to-day child rearing occurs within the nuclear family itself. In the Kibbutz communities of Israel just a generation or so ago, however, child care often takes a communal form. These societies consciously chose to raise their children with community care constituting the majority of the environment to which the child was exposed. These individuals considered community care superior, in fact, to child rearing in the nuclear home. Interestingly, however, the communal child care situation which existed in the Israel Kibbutz just a generation or so ago is on the decline. While many still advocate communal care, others contend that it was simply a fad and one for which there were more disadvantages than advantages. While the Israel Kibbutz has been in operation for many years, its philosophies in general have been a topic of considerable debate practically since the first Kibbutz was formed. The first kibbutz was founded in 1909 in Umm Juni (Nyrop, 1991). Ever since that initial formation the Kibbutz has been viewed alternately with admiration and speculation by cultures outside, in indeed even inside, Israel. Indeed, the Kibbutz would become quite controversial.
