The control system will impact on, and be impacted by the four functions of management; planning, organizing, leading and controlling. To look at the way the control systems impact on each are of management, the four functions can be considered separately. The first function is planning; planning may be defined as "A scheme, program, or method worked out beforehand for the accomplishment of an objective" (Dictionary.com, 2009). Planning takes place in McDonalds at different levels. There have been a number of factors that have exerted a control on the way that the planning process takes place. Market controls have been highly influential. Market controls have been in the form of market pressures to which the firm has had to respond as well as agreement that have been made between the fast food industry and governments in some countries, as a strategy to avoid facing additional legislation. Many of these control impact on the type of food sold, and have seen McDonalds strategy change so that a new menu has been offered, with more salads and healthy food. This has seen McDonalds plan a healthier offering, adapting existing productions, for example, the fries sold in the US are now free of trans fats (Reuters, 2008). The initial reaction to changes in the market by the McDonalds management had been to resist this change, arguing that there would be an adverse impact on the taste of the fries. However as competitors such as Burger Kong and KFC all changed and pressure mounted the market pressure and control that is exerted by the market impacted the plans and changed the plan, a plan that has seen the overall strategy if the firm change, not only in the US ...
