way in which humans function in their everyday lives. Scientists who engage in the discipline conduct tests in order to find out how different chemicals affect the bodies of human beings (1995). The area of expertise developed for two primary reasons which are that biologists have simply come up with new methods in the study of chemicals and the government, as well as ordinary people, are interested in the environment (1995). This is particularly true as it respects pollutants and how they cause illness (1995). Although one can plainly see how toxicology as a science is pertinent to the way in which people live today, it is also true that poisons seem far removed from ordinary life. Why is toxicology so important? There are a number or reasons. One is that people want to keep clean and safe homes. On a recent Jane Pauley television show, an investigator examined a womans refrigerator to find that there were a great deal of dangerous foods left there. The food had been left in the refrigerator for a long time and mold and bacteria developed. Generally speaking, many people do not follow the package directions and they will consume food that is past its consumption date. For the most part, people survive and may just get a slight case of food poisoning. It is also true that medications should be discarded after the expiration date. While many drugs simply lose potency, some medications will change and actually become toxic. There are many toxic drugs and plants in the environment. Plants like rhododendron or hemlock will cause illness and sometimes even death ("Toxicology," 1995). It is hard to believe that medications or plants can do extreme harm.
