However, these attitudes will not work in the military, which is not a democracy and which depends for its success on timing and obedience to orders. This paper discusses in detail why its important for military personnel to be on time and to follow orders. Discussion We begin with the issue of tardiness. The military is very precise in the way it does things. For example, every U.S. military base in the world raises the American flag at 8 a.m. sharp and lowers it at sunset. On any given base, meals are served at the same time every day; mail call is held at the same time every day and so on. When military personnel want to take a vacation, they request leave, which begins and ends at a specific time on a specific day. Time is very important to every aspect of military life. It is particularly vital when it comes to standing duty. Security is an important part of military life, and that means that people are on duty at all times. They stand watch in hangars, in barracks, on ships; wherever there are military personnel and equipment someone has the responsibility of guarding it. These watches, like most everything else in the military, begin and end at specified times, and the person coming on duty is supposed to arrive a few minutes before duty begins so that the person he is replacing can brief him on anything that he needs to know before he begins the watch. A watch stander doesnt just sit for the duration of the duty; he is expected to walk the premises to make sure everything is secure, and he makes a record of these "tours" in a logbook. ...
