that hypothesis to develop a more accurate representation of the truth, a scientific model works in the same way: the model represents a hypothetical view of the truth, which can in turn grant greater understanding that cyclically improves the accuracy of the model itself. To better understand this, one might look at a few key examples of models that are used in various fields of science. For instance, physicists use the analogy of billiard balls to model the movement of atoms in a gaseous state, because this demonstrates the manner in which atoms in a gas cloud erratically bounce off of one another; in turn, scientists can also observe the mechanisms which control the seemingly random collision of billiard balls to better understand how gasses work (Frigg & Hartmann 2006). Additionally, the double-helix model of a DNA strand is useful for helping an observer to understand the process of bases connecting to one another in an organized and predictable fashion, as well as how vast amounts of protein-coded information can be packed into a dense space (Frigg & Hartmann 2006). In the most basic sense, models such as this can be viewed as scientifically important because they allow one to directly observe phenomena that are otherwise too large (such as the solar system) or too small (cellular anatomy) to be viewed directly (National Aeronautics and Space Administration 2010). Models can be more than this, however. They can also provide a systematically organized view of complex systems such as the weather through providing an understanding of how a confluence of observable variables impact the phenomenon as a whole (NASA 2010). This has a number of important implications for human society. One of the most important implications is the ability of modeling to be used by environmental scientists to achieve ...
