However, it was in the Assyrian empire that much of what is known today was really first developed and utilized. The following paper examines the importance and significance of the Assyrian Empire in history. The Importance of Assyrian History The early empire period of the Assyrian people, the time in which they obviously appeared, comes between 4500 and 2400 B.C. wherein "complex societies appear in the form of cities, with craft specialization and writing...In Assyria, settlements had become large and guarded by fortifications walls, which implies the risk of attack from outside, and hence the need for defense and warfare" (BetBasoo, 2006). From around 2400 B.C. Assyria became a more fruitful and influential empire as beginning with this year "This period would see 1800 years of Assyrian hegemony over Mesopotamia, beginning with Sargon of Akkad in 2371 B.C. and ending with the tragic fall of Nineveh in 612 B.C." (BetBasoo, 2006). One of the early leaders was Sargon of Akkad, who set up his particular kingdom around 2371 B.C. and became the first king to actually inflict his control past his own city-state (BetBasoo, 2006). He essentially laid down the model that all other emperors of Assyria would follow, possessing control of a great deal of areas (BetBasoo, 2006). Around 1365 B.C. Ashuruballit "laid the foundation of the first Assyrian empire...which lasted until approximately 1248 B.C." (BetBasoo, 2006). With each period came more and more control, expansion, and influence.
