China has been cited as a violator of the human rights covenants that were established by the United Nations. One of the main concerns of the United Nations (UN) has been human rights. This concern paved the way for a series of international agreements, which were signed by individual nations. Under the auspices of the UN, the human rights committees focus their goals on human rights violations, and ensuring equality on all aspects (Anonymous, 1996, pp. 40). In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared it to be "essential, if man is not be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law" (Anonymous, 1996, pp. 40). A series of international covenants have addressed specific human rights over the years. Those covenants have been signed by individual nations as State parties. In order to assess their commitments under those covenants, committees meet regularly. "The Human Rights Committee at its fifty-eighth session (21 October-8 November, Geneva) asked for incorporation of the 1966 Covenant on Civil and Political Rights into Danish domestic law; maintained that China would be obligated to implement the Covenant in Hong Kong, even if it is not a State party; called for an end to reported police ill-treatment of people, particularly foreigners held in police custody in Switzerland; called for ...
