In fact, while social consequences are feared inclusive of individuals being able to choose the eye color of their offspring, or living in a Gattaca type world, the reality is not all that sinister. Human cloning-like stem cell research-- may be used for good and it seems that the potential for good far outweighs the negative connotation it carries. That said, it pays to explore the ethics of cloning. After all, there are many social implications of being able to tamper with nature. In an article about cloning, Silver (1988) presents an anecdote about a woman named Jennifer who in the year 2050 is secretly impregnated with her clone, she names Rachel. Although Jennifer agrees to carry the baby, she keeps the details of her pregnancy a secret (Silver, 1988). In the story, it is expected that Rachel would grow up and no one, even Rachel, would know how she was convinced (Silver, 1988). Perhaps later, when Rachel is older, she will be told that she is actually a clone (Silver, 1988). But this brings up ethical implications. When it is time to tell Rachel more about her past, questions arise as to who her parents are. Who are her parents? It is an important question. In this world, all people have a lineage and parental rights are relevant in society. To actually not have a parent is unknown to the world at the present time. After the anecdote is given, Silver (1988) goes on to provide much food for thought. Later in the article for example, Silver (1988) provides another hypothetical situation where someone is cloned without consent.
