Discussion First of all, this subject is too broad because there are many kinds of security. There is physical security, such as that provided to the President, heads of state, celebrities and other persons. There is the security provided by guards for a building or installation. There is internet security; there is security provided by personnel at airports, seaports and train stations-the list is endless. All security has the same basic mission, however: there is a person, place or product that needs to be protected, and people with specialized training in security are hired or assigned to protect it. This concept is as old as humanity: when man decided that some things were worth protecting from the predations of others, security was born. History of security services: Security goes back to the Code of Hammurabi, the ancient Babylonian king who was the first to codify a set of laws. His legal code, which was developed around 2000 BC, was "designed to regulate the behavior of people to one another and to society as a whole" (Brislin, 1998, p. 1). Even more importantly, perhaps, the Code described what punishment would be used against someone who violated these laws: "The old saying an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth is generally accepted to have been initiated in this code" (Brislin, 1998, p. 1). In other words, the punishment for a crime was to be proportional to the crime committed.
