History reports that Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pooley were the first Greek family ever to settle in Chicago. Like their immigrant counterparts, the Pooleys sought to acquire as much as they could from America, whose streets were "paved with gold" (Anonymous greek.htm). In that day, it was not unlikely for the standard Greek immigrant to end up in Chicago not much more than an eager young lad who was barely educated and had little social breeding. Still, this was not to be a setback for a spry and ambitious community of hard workers that "more than compensated for an apparent lack of skills" (Anonymous greek.htm). For many, the quest for money was inspiration enough to keep them in Chicago for only a certain amount of time, as their primary goal was to take their earnings back home and live the life of luxury. Indeed, there was no shortage of work for those who did not put forth their efforts into the food industry; this element kept the immigrants coming full force for quite a while. Yet, the dream of returning home after making ones fortune did not pan out for those who invested their hard work, time and money into family businesses, building communities and putting down significant religious roots. ...
