THE GLASS CEILING Gender discrimination in the workplace is an industry ill that has run rampant over the past couple of decades. Only within this time frame has society come to realize that there is no place for gender prejudice when both men and women are working hard toward the same economic goals. "Despite regulations that attempt to promote equality within the workplace, discrimination against certain social groups such as women still occurs, with women faring worse than men on most measures of economic equity, including income, unemployment, and occupational distribution" (Trentham 1998, 1). In some cases, women have demonstrated considerable more dedication to the job than men, who are often categorized as being lazy and ineffective. Indeed, there is room for both genders within the workplace, but it is establishing an element of respect of person, as well as union representation and recognition of duty, toward one another that will ultimately eliminate gender prejudice in the workplace. Women and their families still have an ongoing struggle to contend with in relation to equal economic treatment in the workplace, even though they are making some stride within the corporate structure. While many companies are rising to the challenge of creating a more gender-friendly environment, many others are still promoting only white men up the ranks of the company ladder.
