There was no question that she had earned this extra time off, since she had been with the small company for nearly ten years. However, the surgery that Carla was scheduled to have was not mandated by her physician; rather, it was liposuction, a completely elective cosmetic procedure that raised a few eyebrows from her superiors. Verespej (1993) clarifies the fact that employers may determine the twelve-month period as long as it is consistently applied; e.g., calendar year, fiscal year, rolling year measured from the date the leave is used or requested, or any other fixed twelve-month period (p. 71).
